FOSTERING A COLLEGE BOUND CULTURE AT CPMS!
AVID's mission is to close the achievement gap by preparing all students for college readiness and success in a global society.
AVID's impact on the Beaverton School District
Want to make a direct impact closing access and opportunity gaps for as little as one hour a week? AVID scholars at Cedar Park need you and your friends to be AVID tutors. You don't have to be a content expert, you just have to care about kids being empowered to get to college. Consider this tutoring opportunity and please pass the word on!
AVID is not just another program…
at its heart,
AVID is a philosophy. Hold students accountable to the highest standards, provide academic and social support, and they will rise to the challenge.
What is AVID?
AVID, Advancement via Individual Determination, is a global nonprofit organization dedicated to closing the achievement gap by preparing all students for college and other postsecondary opportunities. Established more than 30 years ago with one teacher in one classroom, AVID today impacts more than 1,000,000 students in 46 states and 16 other countries/territories.
AVID’s mission is to “close the achievement gap by preparing all students for college readiness and success in a global society.”
What AVID Does:
AVID trains educators to use proven practices in order to prepare students for success in high school, college, and a career, especially students traditionally underrepresented in higher education.
How AVID Works:
AVID brings research-based strategies and curriculum to educational institutions in elementary, secondary, and higher education. The AVID system annually provides more than 30,000 educators with training and methodologies that develop students’ critical thinking, literacy, and math skills across all content areas throughout the entire campus, in what is called Schoolwide AVID.
AVID:
Teaches skills and behaviors for academic success
Provides intensive support with tutorials and strong student/teacher relationships
Creates a positive peer group for students
Develops a sense of hope for personal achievement gained through hard work and determination
AVID College Readiness System: Secondary Level
AVID secondary develops learning, study and academic behavioral skills that are essential to success in rigorous coursework. It acts as a catalyst for schools to develop a culture of college readiness for all students across the campus. In the AVID Elective class, students receive daily instruction and support to prepare them for college from a trained AVID Elective teacher. AVID impacts students schoolwide as academic strategies like writing to learn, inquiry, collaboration, organizational skills, and critical reading (WICOR) are taught in all classes by teachers who have been trained to use AVID strategies in their specific content areas.
AVID students are students in the academic middle, capable of completing a college preparatory path with support. These students often are not realizing their full potential academically. In the identification process a number of criteria are considered, including:
State Test Scores
Grades
Citizenship
Attendance
Desire and Determination
First in Family to Attend College
Historically Underrepresented in 4-year Colleges
Economically Disadvantaged
Other Special Circumstances
While all of the criteria are considered for acceptance into the program, no single criteria will necessarily eliminate a student from consideration. The AVID program should reflect the demographics of the school it is serving.
Students participating in special education, gifted and talented programs, and ELL will be considered for AVID based on the criteria listed above. Currently, there are a number of students from these groups successfully participating in the AVID program.
Once Selected for AVID, What are the Student Requirements?
AVID students must:
attend an AVID elective class
enroll in one or more advanced academic class (Pre-AP or AP at the High School level and honors classes at the Middle Level) each semester
maintain satisfactory citizenship and attendance in all classes
maintain the AVID binder with assignment/grade record sheets and daily notes in all classes
complete all homework assignments and commit to studying every night
What AVID Is:
an acronym that stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination
an in-school academic support program for grades 4 – 12 that prepares students for college eligibility and success
for all students, but it targets those in the academic middle
